Disarmament and International Security

The First Committee is responsible for addressing issues related to disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace that affect the international community. It seeks out solutions to the challenges in the international security regime.

The United Nations (UN) Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) was the first of the Main Committees created in the General Assembly when the United Nations charter was signed in 1945. It considers all matters related to disarmament and international security within the scope of the Charter or those related to the powers and functions of any other organ of the United Nations. Additionally, it deals with the general principles of cooperation in the maintenance of international peace and security, as well as principles governing disarmament and the regulation of armaments. The Committee also promotes cooperative arrangements and measures aimed at strengthening stability through lower levels of armaments.

The Committee works closely with the United Nations Disarmament Commission and the Conference on Disarmament based in Geneva. It is the only Main Committee of the General Assembly that is entitled to verbatim records coverage.
