Special Political and Decolonization
The Special Political and Decolonization Committee, also known as the Fourth Committee, discusses a wide range of issues related to decolonization. It covers five decolonization-related agenda items, including questions related to the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, and the work of the Special Committee on Decolonization. The Committee also examines the effects of atomic radiation, and questions regarding information, such as the role of the United Nations in promoting a new information and communication order.
In addition, the Fourth Committee conducts a comprehensive review of the question of peacekeeping operations as well as a review of special political missions. It also considers the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and Israeli practices and settlement activities affecting the rights of the Palestinian people and other Arabs of the occupied territories.
Furthermore, the Committee discusses international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space, including the activities of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs. It also examines the issue of disarmament and security in outer space, and the prevention of an arms race in outer space.
